Rock 101 music program in Sayville for kids and beginners
Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Sayville's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Sayville have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in Sayville are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Sayville who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

The Performance Program at School of Rock Sayville is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Sayville Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Sayville music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Sayville's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Sayville music venue.

Rookies
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Sayville, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Sayville, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

At School of Rock Sayville our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock Sayville, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

At School of Rock Sayville, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
 
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

Ages 18+

School of Rock Sayville's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Sayville is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Sayville.

The School of Rock Sayville House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Sayville's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at NY rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Sayville and the rest of NY. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

Gary studied with some of the world's most renowned drum teachers, including: Carmine Appice, Joe Franco, Bobby Rondinelli, Michael Lauren, Dave Stark, Dom Famularo and Jim Chapin. He performed and recorded with some of Long Island's best original bands, including: Pyra, Tombstone Shadow, Hot Tin Roof, Fire, Mudcat, Sinner's Prayer and Soulstice. Gary also taught over a thousand students.

Paul is a professional musician from the Long Island area. He went to LIU Post and received a bachelor's degree in Music. He has performed all over the NY area and beyond, from the studio at Webster Hall to the Great South Bay Music Festival.

Paul currently plays drums in his band Staleworth. While in college, he performed at the Prudential Center and toured Costa Rica among other great performance opportunities with his school's groups. He is passionate about helping his students discover what music can mean for them.

Wayne Sayres is a multi-instrumentalist and instructor with over 20 years’ experience recording and performing live on saxophone, electric and acoustic guitars and bass guitar.

Wayne was a featured saxophonist in two Rolling Stones tribute acts, The Rolling Stoners and Tumblin’ Dice, and has played in numerous cover bands and original touring bands in the local scene playing venues and annual festivals in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he was based prior to moving to Huntington early last year.

Since moving to Long Island in early 2020, Wayne joined up with yet another Stones tribute called “Shattered” as well as New Country Road Show, an Americana/country/blues act, and the Big Bad Wolf Blues Ensemble, a band born of members meeting at casual local open mics.

Having given music lessons intermittently throughout the last several years, Wayne decided during the pandemic to get much more involved in teaching and build up a roster of students, so it’s been an absolute pleasure for him to be brought onboard at School of Rock to give group and one-on-one instruction.

Arahmus Brown is an upcoming artist. Before adolescence, he taught himself how to play the guitar, piano, drums, bass guitar and was classically trained on the saxophone. By the time he turned fifteen, he composed songs and formed a band to follow his lead. A one-man-band in his own right, he has the ability to play any part in the songs he writes. The creative sings and raps over his own melodies, creating harmony seldom experienced in real life. He makes his own content which was noticed by famous producer and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Keith Shocklee. The two collaborated on multiple, highly anticipated, projects. Industry professionals believe that Arahmus will be an instrumental force that offers a new brand of creativity.

Matt is originally from Long Island and a Five Towns College graduate that has studied with some of the greatest musicians in the local area such as John Kelly, Tony Romano, Steve Briody, and Scott Ballin. His skill set is diverse and he covers a wide array of genres like Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, and Funk. In Matt's free time, he produces his own music and is the guitarist for a popular Long Island artist by the name of Arahmus Brown. Matt is a guitar teacher and bass guitar teacher at School of Rock Sayville, sharing the wealth of knowledge he’s acquired over the years.

Katelyn Deveraux is a vocalist and instrumentalist from Long Island, NY. She graduated with an associate's degree in Arts and Sciences from Suffolk County Community College and aspires to earn her bachelor's degree in Childhood Music Education in the future. She is focused on teaching vocals and guitar, and beginner bass guitar.

Raised on listening to Pink Floyd and The Beatles, Katelyn was set up from the start to be a rock musician! She started singing at 9 years old and went on to join School of Rock for performance and vocal lessons when she turned 15. Katelyn was a student at School of Rock for four years, performing in a number of shows (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Smiths vs. The Cure, Woodstock, 27 Club, etc.) as well as auditioning and becoming a member of her school’s Street Team band. She found a passion for making music as a student at School of Rock, especially with her peers.

Now a part of the School of Rock team, Katelyn can share her passion with her students and bring out the best in them just as her previous instructors and directors did, years ago. She emphasizes the importance of stage presence and connecting with the audience and bandmates to her students, alongside teaching vocal techniques and learning songs, inside and out. Whether they are jamming to punk songs on guitar or belting out Janis Joplin records, Katelyn is there to help her students thrive and be confident in their performance for years to come in their musical journeys.

Lexi picked up the guitar when she was 5 years old and instantly fell in love with it. She continued playing for over 19 years, taking lessons between the ages of 10 and 19. Lexi continued on her path by taking vocal lessons for three years. Throughout her time learning, Lexi focused mainly on jazz improvisation and chord theory to write her own music.

After high school, Lexi studied music business at Five Towns College. Following her studies, Lexi has continued to grow as a musician, releasing numerous singles and projects under her name. Lexi is now a song leader at New Hope Baptist church. She hopes to assist all students with their musical journeys and their passion for music.

Arianna is a professional singer and musician who graduated from Pace University with a bachelor's degree in Music and Entertainment Studies. She spent her life studying music and attended a weekend music school similar to School of Rock. While studying, Arianna was hand-picked to sing in trial bands where she spent her teenage years touring around China, Germany, and the United States. After the cover band shows, she ended her tour by singing a sold-out show in Carnegie Hall.

Currently, Arianna teaches private piano and singing/songwriting lessons, while also performing locally and writing music. She loves being able to create an open and fun environment for the next generation of music students who desire to perform and study music. She hopes to be a great asset to the School of Rock team and the Farmingdale and Sayville communities.

Mathew Godfrey is a seasoned New York City guitarist and educator with a career spanning over two decades. He has honed his craft and become a masterful musician in a musical journey spanning NYC clubs to performances on global stages.

Mathew's foundation in music was forged at the renowned Berklee College of Music, where he earned his performance degree in 2006. Shortly after graduating from Berklee, his band, the New York Funk Exchange, released two full-length albums and toured the country extensively, leaving their mark on the vibrant funk music scene. Beyond his performances, Mathew has taken on the role of mentor and educator. Notably, he has served as both the teacher and guitarist for the extraordinary talent Brandon Taz Niederauer, a testament to his exceptional teaching and mentorship.

Matt's influence has reached the grand stages of Broadway, where he has served as a private instructor for the gifted casts of Broadway's School of Rock, nurturing young talents and guiding them toward musical excellence. At the age of 12, Asa picked up a pair of drumsticks and never looked back. With proficiency in multiple genres such as funk, rock, and pop he came up playing various shows throughout the island, NYC, and New Jersey areas. In his high school bands, he played RWDSU’s labor union floats for the New York City Labor Day parades of 2015 and 2016. In college, he drummed with the band Away For The Day and played corporate galas for DUNKIN’.

Currently, Asa plays drums every Sunday at Living Waters Christian Center Church in Amityville. As a drum teacher at School of Rock Farmingdale, he strives to provide a musical foundation for his students that emphasizes passion, perseverance, and overall having fun.

Jordan is a multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, music producer, and professional recording artist based in New York. He was captivated by the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock as a kid and learned guitar by ear with music from bands like Nirvana, The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Jordan started drumming by playing on pillows, just like one of his heroes, Dave Grohl, until he saved up for his first drum kit. As his hobby turned to passion, he picked up more instruments like bass and keys and sought classical voice training.

In everything he does, Jordan brings passion, curiosity, and open-mindedness. He learned the value of dedication and community in the arts through years of self-teaching, plus his time with mentors and bandmates. He encourages everyone to exceed their potential, and seek new heights within themselves.

Today, Jordan releases music under the name Jordan Ficton. Alongside music, Jordan enjoys creating content online and helping other local acts market their music. Above all, he is always ready to rock!

Erin has a lifelong passion for music, and can usually be found trying to teach herself a new instrument, studying song credits for fun facts, or traveling to another live music event. She is driven by connecting others to good experiences in music, education, and wellness, coming from a career in academic research and consulting with school districts nationwide.

Erin has been passionate about singing and school from a young age. Her proudest achievements include bringing T-Pain to her small Catholic college campus and being a first-generation college (and graduate) student. She performed in various vocal ensembles throughout school, serving as Music Director of an all-female a cappella group in college.

Currently, Erin runs an internship program at the Jones Beach Amphitheater, guiding high school graduates into careers in the music industry while she wraps up an MBA in Music Business.

Joel Camp is a certified public school music instructor who has been teaching music education for over 14 years to the age groups that attend School of Rock Sayville. Joel has worked with experienced students, as well as children with special needs. He has extensive knowledge of symphonic, rock, and jazz ensembles, music theory, and choral practice, including improvisation. Joel is a woodwind specialist who is also fluent on piano, brass, percussion, and composition. Since 2000, he has given over 30 winter and spring concerts for grades K-12 and inspired children with fantastic success at NYSSMA.

Joel is also performance-oriented since the age of 15 and is familiar with team building and stage techniques. He has been networking with hundreds of musicians for the past 20 years. Joel is a successful composer who has helped students establish a way to be creative with their own writing skills. A tenor saxophonist, composer, and educator, Joel has performed on Broadway at the Hudson Theater, The Paramount in Long Island, Carnegie Hall, Westbury Music Center, and at festivals such as Bradstock and Gathering of the Vibes throughout the United States and Canada. He has composed over 100 works for classical, jazz, and rock ensembles, including his new quartet Gravity.

Caitlin Rossbotham is one of the vocal instructors here at the School of Rock in Sayville, New York. She is currently majoring in Vocal Performance and Education at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College.

Caitlin is a former School of Rock student and performed in numerous seasonal shows and as part of her school's House Band. She has played at notable venues including the Knitting Factory, the Bitter End, 89 North, and more. Caitlin now regularly performs in operas and contemporary gigs and wants to continue to be a part of the School of Rock community and share her knowledge and experiences with others.

Loula Boulukos is an upcoming artist from Long Island, New York. She started writing poetry at the age of 12 and incorporated her poems into music and songwriting. Loula grew up listening to rock music and rap music and combined the two genres which she calls rock/rap or trapmetal. Her biggest inspirations are Eminem, The Notorious B.I.G., Remy Ma, and Missy Elliot. She is inspired by the Y2K punk style which is also seen in her music with hard punchlines and dark lyrics.

Loula takes pride in writing her very own songs to show their authenticity. She is currently working with her mentor Enjetic who has helped her name make noise in the music industry as well as gaining the attention of legends such as Charles Hamilton.

What I like about the program is that my kids LOVE it!

This is so different from the music lessons that existed when I was a kid. These kids are actually making music and learning to play as a band. The performances are so impressive, and watching the kids gain confidence and express themselves on stage is priceless.

The structure around how kids learn is amazing.

Taking lessons to learn an instrument is one thing, but learning how to be a part of a band is on another level. These kids are learning how to communicate, respect people and their opinions, and how to be accountable for themselves. It’s more than just music here.
