Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Palo Alto's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Palo Alto have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in Palo Alto are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Palo Alto who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

The Performance Program at School of Rock Palo Alto is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Palo Alto Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Palo Alto music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Palo Alto's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Palo Alto music venue.

Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Palo Alto, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Palo Alto, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

At School of Rock Palo Alto our Little Wing music program for preschoolers and toddlers teaches students foundational music skills by playing games and participating in other interactive musical activities. Little Wing students have one weekly group music lesson in which they use classic rock songs to learn about rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

The Path to Take the Stage

The Little Wing music program is the first step in a young musician's journey. At School of Rock Palo Alto, toddlers and preschoolers who show an interest in music should start with Little Wing. As they get older, they will progress into the Rookies program, followed by Rock 101 and the Performance Program.

Songwriting
Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock Palo Alto, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in Palo Alto is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock Palo Alto who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

At School of Rock Palo Alto, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
 
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

School of Rock Palo Alto's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Palo Alto is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Palo Alto.

The School of Rock Palo Alto Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in Palo Alto.

The School of Rock Palo Alto House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Palo Alto's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at CA rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Palo Alto and the rest of CA. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

General Manager Brian
Brian
General Manager
Brian is a graduate of Full Sail University with a Media Communications Certificate (2014), a Bachelor of Science in Entertainment Business Management (2016), and a Master of Science in Entertainment Management (2020).

Brian is currently the General Manager of School of Rock Palo Alto. His previous efforts included working as a Studio Coordinator at two other School of Rock locations in Northern California.

His past musical experience includes playing bass in a Nu-Metal band in the late '90s. His love for everything music started at a young age with his father, who was also a musician. Brian expanded his love for music becoming a disc jockey at Sacramento High School student radio, KXHV 89.7 FM. From there he worked at 98 Rocks, 96.9 The Eagle, Tower Records, and more.

Brian launched Vertical Talent Agency LLC in 2020, becoming owner and Talent Agent focusing on celebrity appearance bookings with conventions, festivals, red carpets, and beyond.

Will
Music Director
Will was born in Felpham West Sussex, England, and moved to California when he was 14 years old. In California Will graduated Cupertino High School, then studied music at De Anza college and music production at Foothill college.

Will is an established multi instrumentalist, playing both drums and guitar proficiently. Studying both instruments intensely with a variety of teachers, he learned a range of styles: Rock, Pop, Blues, Metal, Funk, and Hip Hop.
He has toured across the United States, recorded multiple albums with both instruments, and is now in the process of recording his first solo album!

Will has been a private music teacher before School Of Rock, but has never taught at a place that teaches rock musicians the importance of playing in a band, and how to have fun with music!

Claudia has performed in the Bay Area as a vocalist for many years. As the co-founder and lead vocalist of several rock bands, she wrote and recorded a highly acclaimed CD while in the group Psycho Betty, from which two songs received national attention on television and in international syndication. Psycho Betty opened for a number of rock groups, including War, Edgar Winter and Ronnie Montrose. Claudia is currently performing in jazz big bands and with Fog City Band doing rock, funk and soul music.

Julia joined a choir in 2005 and hasn't stopped singing since. She was awarded the music service award in high school and earned her Bachelors in Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Redlands. While her specialty is in Broadway and opera, she loves playing music with her School of Rock bandmates and students. Julia's favorite bands are Radiohead, The Beatles, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day and Queen. Little known fact: she is currently writing a book about classical composers and all the personal drama they endured being the rock stars of their days. She is a piano teacher and vocal instructor at School of Rock Palo Alto.

In 1959 Alan asked his parents if he could get a guitar and they said no, but he wanted to play so he bought a guitar at the pawn shop for 20 dollars and didn't tell his parents. He kept the guitar hidden in his closet and every time his folks would leave the house he would get out the guitar and learn a new chord. A few months later he was jamming at home with two of his buddies when his parents came home unexpectedly to find a rock band in their garage. They didn't like their music but they soon grew to accept it since they started making money at local gigs. By the time he was 18 he had played with two bands with hit records, The Rivieras and The Castaways. Playing with these groups, he had the opportunity to open for some major rock legends including Jerry Lee Lewis, The Yardbirds, and Paul Revere and The Raiders. Alan is a guitar teacher and bass guitar teacher at School of Rock Palo Alto.

Drum Teacher
JB is a percussionist and session musician, born and raised in Campbell, CA. Having an interest in music and percussion from an early age, he picked up playing the drums as well as many other forms of percussion. After founding and participating in several musical projects varying from rock and roll to jazz, flamenco and folk, he became best known for his work with the metal band Crepuscle. Released one album and he is working on many more! Music is his passion and he is ready to rock!

Robert is a guitar teacher and bass guitar teacher at School of Rock Palo Alto. He is originally from the east coast and is a recent transplant to northern California. Robert has over 20+ years playing guitar. bass and vocals. He has played in multiple bands that have been featured on the Vans Warped Tour and cross-country independent tours. Most of the bands he has been in (Deagle, Reflective Insight, Torch the Throne, Cult Classic) have put out LPs and EPs. He has played notable venues such as CBGBs in NYC and the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. His current band is called Cult Classic.

Paul feels blessed to have grown during an era when some of the best music ever was being written, recorded, and performed. Paul realized he wanted to play the guitar in 1985 when he watched the music video for "Shout" by Tears For Fears and saw Roland Orzabal standing high atop a mountain playing the electric guitar, expressing his emotions through his instrument.

Paul's dad bought him his first electric guitar and he spent countless hours in his room playing that guitar until his fingers hurt, and the rest is history. Paul believes the guitar is a student's tool for their freedom of expression and he can’t wait to take his students on a journey to bring out their very best on this instrument!

Chas is a multi-instrumentalist from Stanford, California. He has explored music since a young age, with performances in theater and chorale. Of all the instruments, his favorite is guitar, but he also enjoys playing bass, piano/keys, singing, and (MPC) drumming. Chas graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2020, with a performance and music tech concentration. One of his goals as a teacher is to help enable his students to achieve fluency on their instrument and to expand their repertoire.

Leilani is a Bay Area native who graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a BM in Music Business (2022). While there, she played saxophone and flute in various ensembles. Although she has knowledge of the creative process and execution, she enjoys being on the sideline and working behind the scenes.

In most recent years, Leilani has interned for Zync Music, a Round Hill Company, as a Creative Publishing and Licensing Intern, Velvet Hammer Music and Management Group as an Artist Manager Intern, and Pacific Symphony as a Volunteer Services and Developmental Department Intern. While an intern, she has worked directly under artist managers for numerous acclaimed bands such as Avenged Sevenfold, Alice in Chains, Deftones, Korn, AFI, and System of a Down. Her previous experience also includes working for stage and operation managers and directors for a well-known symphonic orchestra in Southern California and her alma mater.

Geoff first dreamed about playing the guitar at the age of 6 after watching AC/DC: Let There Be Rock in the theaters with his three older siblings. Angus Young and Eddie Van Halen became instant guitar inspirations after Geoff saw them live in concert at an early age. It wasn’t very long after that he convinced his older sisters and parents to purchase him a guitar and enroll him in guitar lessons at the local music store. Geoff eventually started his own original garage rock band in junior high with his closest neighborhood buddies.

Rooted mostly in classic rock and influenced by MTV culture, Geoff performed and dreamed about their band making it big throughout high school. Fast forward a few more years, Geoff was working in music retail at the same local music shop where he began taking guitar lessons when he was offered his own teaching gig in 1996. Geoff has been teaching music lessons full-time, producing his own music, and performing in various bands.

Robbie has been playing drums since forever. His father had drum sets ready to play around the house while growing up.

Robbie attended school with a focus in music and played in the jazz band and symphonic band. After college, Robbie continued to play drums for musicals all around the city. He writes his own music and has performed with a few bands in town including Dry Creek Manor, Louis Wain and the Cats, Love District, Lizard Kingdom, and Let’s Play Yoshi’s.

Robbie performed at the 2014 Vans Warped Tour at Shoreline Amphitheater on the local bands' stage and has performed at many other venues and clubs in the entire Bay Area.

Robbie can play all types of music genres and his skill sets include jazz, rock, metal, and odd time signatures, and he has a great understanding of theory and tablature reading for guitar, keys, bass, and vocals.

Kam
Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher
Kam is a multi-instrumentalist and plays guitar, bass, and drums. He studied Music Theory at Foothill College and was also in the Jazz Combos and Rhythm and Blues Ensembles at Foothill. He then attended SFSU and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Political Science before graduating from law school.

Kam formed a blues band called Blue Tooth in 2006 and has been performing at local venues with the band ever since.

Trevor is a Bay Area native who has been passionately playing drums since he was 5 years old. He has Marching and Orchestral training and has completed advanced drumming and music theory courses, and earned an associate bachelor's degree in audio engineering. Trevor also took advanced lessons from Mike Vanderhule to hone his abilities. He mainly plays at local venues but has toured in Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, and Texas. He has opened up for Rhino Bucket, Gary Hoey, Helmet, Digital Underground, and Y&T.

Trevor can play many genres of music but prefers to play rock, progressive rock, and experimental/instrumental. He still passionately plays and loves incorporating not commonly used equipment into his music such as timpani, gongs, tubular bells, wind chimes, bell chimes, timbales, electronic sound effects, and more.

Katrina is an American singer–songwriter, rapper, producer, arranger, and actress who was born and raised in Washington DC.

Katrina projects a powerful energy and delivery that is untouchable. Her soulful music combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip-hop, and go-go.

Keyboard + Piano Teacher, Vocal Teacher
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Clay has had music in mind from the cradle. His music career began in his teens and has spanned the genres of psychedelic rock and heavy psych, goth, techno, and post-punk.

Clay has performed in various rock groups on vocals, keyboards, guitar, bass, and percussion over the decades. He also has experience with songwriting, arranging, and producing. He has toured many times with his current band and played festivals including local ones like the Haight Street Fair in San Francisco and Sub Zero in San Jose.

Clay has shared bills with many artists including Black Mountain, Dead Meadow, the Dandy Warhols, the Kills, the Alan Parsons Live Project, Cat Power, Swervedriver, and Brant Bjork & Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age). He looks forward to helping tomorrow’s musicians keep the spirit of rock and roll alive and kicking.
